It’s no scoop – it’s hot, far too hot! That’s why we’ve given you some ideas for things to do in Lyon, where you can enjoy air-conditioned places and shady areas, but did you know that there’s a natural air-conditioning system not far from Lyon? In fact, there’s a magical place where the temperature never exceeds 12°C! Yes, we’re talking about the Grottes de La Balme! Just a 40-minute drive away, it’s a true natural refuge, perfect for escaping the heatwave while enjoying an extraordinary adventure!
A refreshing and fascinating getaway
Before you even think about cooling off, a visit to the Grottes de La Balme means plunging into a fascinating underground world. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by a monumental 35-metre-high porch. This impressive natural portal houses two superimposed chapels, sacred remains from the 9th and 14th centuries. Crossing the threshold, you enter a world sculpted by erosion.
What’s on the agenda? Stalactites, stalagmites, small pools (gours), an underground lake, natural labyrinths, vast galleries and, of course, coolness! Here, nature has fashioned a spectacular setting worthy of the finest films you’ve ever seen! You’ll have the chance to discover these cool natural wonders over 1,000 meters, with the option of exploring at your own pace (1h15 self-guided tour) or opting for a guided tour by prior arrangement. Either way, you won’t be disappointed!
A unique place steeped in history

Since 1807, the Grottes de La Balme have been attracting visitors curious to discover the secrets of this magical place. In the depths, an infrared camera may enable you to catch a glimpse of the bats. No fewer than 23 protected species live here, making the caves one of the richest bat refuges in the Rhône-Alpes region! Outside, extend your adventure with a free walk along the Espace Naturel Sensible des Coteaux de Saint-Roch. This marked trail crosses cliffs and forests rich in biodiversity. This time, we’ll wait for cooler weather and don our best hats to make the most of the walk!
Even though we know you’re already dreaming of this little getaway, we’d like to end on a funny note: the word “Balme” already means “cave”, so“Les Grottes de la Balme ” is a nice pleonasm!
A little Lyon Secret tip: bring a little wool, even in the middle of August! Counter-intuitive, but remember that it’s 12 degrees!
