The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is an iconic monument of Lyon’s religious architecture, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a powerful symbol of the city’s cultural history. Perched atop Fourvière Hill, it watches over the people of Lyon and offers those with the faith to climb a spectacular view of the city. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the basilica has become an important site of pilgrimage and Marian devotion. But in addition to being at the heart of religious life, it plays a significant role in Lyon’s cultural life.

A Brief History of the Basilica of Fourvière
Overlooking the “praying hill, ” the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is an inseparable symbol of Lyon’s identity. Its history has its roots in a pious vow: in 1643, the aldermen of Lyon promised to pay homage to the Virgin Mary if the city were spared from the plague. Designed by architect Pierre Bossan, its unique style—a blend of Byzantine, Gothic, and Romanesque influences—was intended to leave a lasting impression through its rich ornamentation.
He envisioned an exterior reminiscent of a medieval fortress (a symbol of protective faith) contrasting with an interior saturated with mosaics, gold, and marble, representing divine splendor. Today, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it watches over Lyon and remains the highlight of the Festival of Lights.
What can you do at the Basilica of Fourvière?
In addition to being a historic and religious monument you can explore for hours, its location offers a delightful stroll through the hills of Lyon. And since you’ve made the climb, you might as well make the most of it! Among all the surrounding views, we recommend stopping at the Jardin des Curiosités, where you can admire the Opera House, Place Bellecour, and La Confluence. Don’t miss the Passerelle des 4 Vents for a fresh perspective on the city, and finally make your way back down to Vieux-Lyon via the Montée Nicolas Delange, a narrow path through the trees that will make you feel like you’re outside the city for a moment (and it’s better to walk down it than up, trust me).
Candlelight Concerts in the Crypt of the Basilica of Fourvière
Enjoy classical concerts paying tribute to the greatest artists in a sumptuous setting. Candlelight will fill the space with the soft glow of thousands of candles, creating an intimate and almost solemn atmosphere to welcome the musicians. The candles, like thousands of votive lights, will add a new dimension to this already magnificent setting.

Did you know that the Basilica of Fourvière…
Is the origin of the Festival of Lights
Finally, on December 8, 1852, the basilica did not yet exist, but the golden statue of Mary (now on the chapel’s roof) and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception—celebrating the Virgin’s saving of Lyon from the plague—did. The problem was that on the evening of the famous statue’s unveiling, a terrible storm struck the city, ruining the celebrations. Once the skies cleared, the people of Lyon decided to light up their homes and the statue with the now-famous candles. The Festival of Lights was born!
Located in the former capital of Gaul
Lyon’s history dates back to 43 BC, with the founding of Lugdunum. At the time, a site dedicated to the Celtic god Lug (hence Lugdunum) —better known today as Fourvière Hill—was chosen. While the Basilica already holds a rich history within its walls, the site on which it stands had long been sacred.

The crypt of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon is a fascinating space, rich in history and spirituality. Located beneath the Basilica, it covers the same area as the Basilica itself and houses numerous relics, including eleven statues of the Virgin Mary from shrines around the world.
