The Fort de Vaise, a hidden gem of the Lyon landscape
Built between 1834 and 1848, the Fort de Vaise was designed to protect the city of Lyon in the event of an attack, thus creating a military barrier right on the banks of the Saône. Its heavy stonework, climbing plants, imposing appearance, and arched windows and doors that let light stream through are all essential elements that give this place a heavenly feel.
This little corner of timeless paradise is slightly removed from the city, yet still very accessible, allowing you to escape into your own little world without having to leave Lyon. Enjoy the view from your vantage point and take in the Saône River and Fourvière.

Fun facts and interesting tidbits about the Fort de Vaise
1. Its location
Built in 1834, it was not considered the most important of the forts due to its size, which could accommodate only 60 people. What made it significant, however, was its strategic location. Serving as a bridge between the Saint-Jean and Loyasse forts, it reinforced the military barrier along the Saône River and protected Lyon from potential enemy attacks via the river.
2. It has almost disappeared
In 1968, as the fort was no longer necessary for the city, it was sidelined in favor of a municipal project to build the current Boulevard Saint-Exupéry. During this construction, a large part of the building was destroyed, leaving only the lower section of the barracks and a few fragments. Fortunately, the Renaud brothers acquired the fort in 1982 and decided to restore it.
3. Its underground passages
Fort de Vaise had a unique feature that made it highly useful: it was connected to Fort de Loyasse via underground tunnels. After several phases of construction and renovation, OCRA Lyon has successfully restored them and now offers tours of the site.
