Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement is the city’s most central location. Occupying almost the entire peninsula, the Palais de la Bourse is surrounded by shops, restaurants and cafés. Impossible to get bored.
Anecdotes and curiosities about the Palais de la Bourse
1. An assassination
On June 24, 1894, French President Sadi Carnot was tragically assassinated by the anarchist Sante Geronimo Caserio under the building’s windows on his way out. At this very spot, a red paving stone is embedded in the floor, accompanied by a commemorative plaque on the wall, recalling this sad event.
2. Inauguration
Construction work began on the building in 1856. On March 15 of that year, the foundation stone was carefully laid. Finally, on August 25, 1860, the building was officially inaugurated in the presence of Napoleon III, Emperor of France, and Empress Eugénie.
3. The original plan
Its original purpose was to house various institutions, including a museum of art and industry, shops, the stockbrokers’ company, the silk brokers, as well as the chamber of commerce and the commercial court. Today, it simply houses the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
