The Théâtre L’Île Ô is spread over several spaces: 3 levels, 2 performance halls and a 130-square-meter rooftop with a breathtaking view of the Rhône River. With its wave-shaped architectural structure reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House, this innovative building blends perfectly with the landscape: you could say it’s in total symbiosis with the river.
Located in the heart of downtown Lyon, since January 2023 it has been home to an artistic, event-based, civic and educational project dedicated primarily to introducing young people to theater. Lyon’s residents are invited to enjoy a unique experience in this hybrid cultural space .
Anecdotes and curiosities about Théâtre L’Île Ô
The idea behind the project
This theater was created in response to a call for projects from VNF(Voies Navigables de France). Its approach, managed by Patadôme Théâtre and Scènes Ôtrement, is to offer not only a performance space, but also a learning environment for young audiences and families. Through theatrical workshops and other activities, it promotes culture from an early age.
Modern architecture
Architect Koen Olthuis is behind this floating building. From the outside, its interlocking white cubes blend in perfectly with the surrounding buildings, while its interior, almost entirely in wood, is a reminder of its connection with nature. Designed to meet ecological challenges, it can be dismantled and completely recycled. A real technical and eco-responsible feat!
