2. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral
A symbol of Old Lyon, Saint-Jean Cathedral is synonymous with many legends, anecdotes and stories. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1862, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, it is a formidable emblem of the medieval-Renaissance era, whose facades are lit up in color every year during the Festival of Lights.

3. Strolling through Vieux-Lyon

4. Place Bellecour
Europe’s largest pedestrian square, Place Bellecour is a central location for many of Lyon’s residents. Like the forecourt of Notre-Dame de Paris, it is the “kilometer zero” square from which all the city’s roads start. It features a statue of the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

5. Place des Terreaux (Hôtel de Ville)
Nestled in the heart of the Presqu’île, Place des Terreaux has retained a charm that has endured through the ages. Bartholdi’s magnificent fountain is no match for the majestic Hôtel de Ville, close to the Opéra de Lyon and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse. It’s a great place to visit, with its formidable Musée des Beaux-Arts.

6. Croix-Rousse district
Along with Vieux-Lyon, Croix-Rousse is the second district in Lyon not to be missed. Its slopes, colorful houses and quiet squares (the Forez square, above) give it the appearance of a Provence village (its Grande Rue is a must). To get there, climb the Montée de la Grande Côte past its authentic boutiques.

7. Confluence district
The Confluence district, in the south of the Presqu’île, underwent its biggest changes in the 1990s. In addition to its new, modern architecture (perfect for photographers), it contains the famous Musée des Confluences, the La Sucrière exhibition space, a marina and the Hôtel de Région.

8. Strolling along the quays
Whether you choose the banks of the Rhône or the banks of the Saône, there are plenty of landscapes to explore. On the Rhône side, watch the reflections of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu lurk on the waves of the river and its barges. On the Saône side, watch the windows of Vieux-Lyon light up at nightfall beneath the enchanting Fourvière.

9. Place des Jacobins
Place des Jacobins, in the second arrondissement, is a jewel sometimes forgotten by tourists. And yet it’s just a stone’s throw from Bellecour! Its pretty fountain was even added to the Supplementary Register of Historic Monuments in 1992. Nearby, stop by Les Éclaireurs Pâtissiers for a taste of their delicious gourmet éclairs.

10. Saint-Georges footbridge
Since 1853, the Saint-Georges footbridge, also known as the Paul-Couturier footbridge, has provided a new pedestrian link between the Presqu’île and Vieux-Lyon, just outside the church of the same name. Its flamboyant red gives it an astonishing, almost bewitching charm, especially at nightfall. It’s a totally Instagrammable spot!

11. Traboules de Lyon
They are the stars of Lyon: the traboules. These fine passages and hidden courtyards are full of surprises and architectural marvels. Hidden throughout the city (but especially in Croix-Rousse and Vieux-Lyon), there are over 500 of them, the most famous of which are the Cour des Voraces and the Tour Rose.

12. Fourvière funicular
There are currently two funicular railways in operation in Lyon (both departing from Vieux-Lyon): the first, towards Saint-Just, takes you to the Roman remains of Lugdunum. The second winds its way up Fourvière hill to the gates of the basilica. Their old red wagons have a singular charm.

13. Lugdunum & Gallo-Roman Museum
Given its historic past, it would have been impossible to draw up this classification without including the magnificent ancient theater and Gallo-Roman museum at Fourvière. This site, known as Lugdunum, also bears the former name of the city of Lyon in Roman times. It’s a must-see for tourists and locals alike.

14. Grand Hôtel-Dieu
In addition to its history (the first sketches of a building on this very square date back to a medieval hospital), the Grand Hôtel-Dieu is a magnificent showcase of neo-classical architecture, where you can stroll through its stores, grab a bite to eat in the terraces of its inner courtyards, or bring back gourmet souvenirs from its halles.

15. Saint-Nizier Church
Listed as a Monument Historique in 1840, the Church of Saint-Nizier is an outstanding example of Lyon’s Gothic catalog. Built in the 14th century, it was partially restored last century: its organ, however, has been mute since around 1975, awaiting work.

16. Palais de la Bourse
Did you know that Lyon’s Palais de la Bourse was France’s main regional market between 1860 and 1880? Today, although it is not open to the public on a regular basis, it does host events open to the public from time to time, notably under the glass roof of its splendid Salle de la Dress Circle.

17. Lyon’s staircases
Attention street-art fans: the traboules are not the only works of art on the Croix-Rousse! Two magnificent super-instagrammable staircases can be photographed here: the blue-clad Escalier Mermet seems to climb to the sky, while the multicolored Prunelle looks like something out of a video game…

18. Passerelle des Quatre Vents
While the Passerelle des Quatre Vents may not be worth its weight in gold for its architecture, it’s certainly worth the detour for its breathtaking view of Fourvière, its basilica, its metal tower (no, it’s not the Eiffel Tower!) and the Saône River separating the hills. Observe the Monts d’Or in the distance, then enjoy the peace and quiet of the pretty Pivoines garden next door.

19. Fort de Vaise
Very little remains of this fort built in 1834 for military defense purposes. The lower part of the barracks, an underground gallery, several casemates and fragments of escarpments steeped in history can still be visited by those most interested, thanks to the OCRA Lyon association or during the Heritage Days.

The Musée des Confluences is a kind of Louvre for Lyon (along with the Musée des Beaux-Arts). It’s a must-see! In addition to its flamboyant architecture, the museum’s collections revolve around the natural sciences and ethnography, with the permanent exhibition alone totalling 3,000 m².

26. Institut & Festival Lumière
Lyon, cradle of the 7th art: in 1895, the Lumière brothers shot the first film in the history of cinema. Today, the street of the same name is home to the friendly Musée Lumière, which showcases the invention of the cinematograph in the 19th century. Outside, take a look at the Mur des Cinéastes, a true Lyon-style Walk of Fame.

28. Attend a show at the Théâtre des Célestins
In addition to its charming facade, this Italian-style theater, originally built in 1972 (!), is especially noteworthy for its majestic gold-and-red Great Hall(which can be visited outside the show!). 29. Visit at the Opéra de Lyon
Although it is now an integral part of Lyon’s urban landscape, the Opera House’s immense semicircular glass roof, rising 42 m above the ground, attracted a great deal of criticism before it was built. Nowadays, it’s impossible to separate it from this iconic building on the Presqu’île, where special tours are sometimes available.

30. Cinema and Miniature Museum

Do we really need to introduce you to the Canuts, the 19th-century weavers who made Lyon the first French city to specialize in this craft and its creations? According to Le Monde in 2017, the Musée des Tissus et Arts Décoratifs textile collection is among the finest on the planet. 34. Contemporary Art Biennial
The Biennale d’Art Contemporain, held every year in conjunction with the Biennale de la Danse, is one of Lyon’s unmissable artistic events. It’s usually held at La Sucrière; however, it’s moving to the former Fagor factories for the 2019 edition.

The Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, which alternates with the Biennale d’Art Contemporain, is a major public event focusing on contemporary dance, particularly new French dance. A creative and performance space for companies, it has its own parade through the streets of the city.

A stone’s throw from the Musée des Confluences is the indestructible Sucrière with its gigantic silos marked “Gauche” and “Droite”. 37. Museum of Automata
Less well known than its counterparts, the Musée des Automates is just as much worth a visit in Lyon, especially if you’ve already visited the Musée des Cinéma et Miniature and the Musée des Arts de la Marionnette. 38. Museum of Contemporary Art
The “MAC”, as it is known in Lyon, has a surface area of around 2,000 m² dedicated to contemporary art. It is located in the Cité Internationale, north of the Parc de la Tête d’Or. 41. Parc de la Tête d’Or
The Parc de la Tête d’Or, as well as being France’s largest urban park, offers a wonderful exploration of the plant world, thanks in particular to its greenhouses and botanical garden. In 2021, it will play host for the first time to Forêts d’Asie, an ensemble dedicated to the survival of endangered species in their natural environment.

47. Gerland Park
Inaugurated in 2001, the Maison des Fleurs du Parc de Gerland is a wonderful place to explore horticultural techniques. The park also features a chromatic garden, illuminated at night by colorful lighting and a sound installation. It was recently renamed Parc Henry-Chabert.

The Flower Tree is a unique work of art in the Lyon landscape. Located behind Bellecour, on the Rhône side, the Flower Tree was created by Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa for the 7th Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art in 2003. His stunning sphere is made up of 85 plastic flowers the size of a car door!
