We talk a lot about villages and lakes, but around Lyon there are also magnificent châteaux like this one! With its spectacular position overlooking the river, Château de la Roche is obviously the emblematic monument of the Gorges de la Loire! As you can see, it looks straight out of an episode of Game of Thrones, and that’s what makes us want to go there even more! Just 1 hour from Lyon, this 13th-century fortress attracts fans of spectacular views thanks to its unique silhouette enthroned on the tranquil waters of the Loire. Romantic, majestic and mysterious, this château is a nugget to be discovered on an out-of-town getaway.
A castle steeped in history
Built between 1256 and 1291 by the Sires de La Roche, the château was originally a defensive house. It later served as a lookout post, toll booth and even a summer residence. Neglected over the centuries, it was restored in the early 20th century in a neo-Gothic style by Paul Roustan, an industrialist from La Roche. It almost disappeared under the waters in 1984 when the Villerest dam was built, but fortunately remained standing thanks to the mobilization of local residents. Today, it remains the only vestige left standing!
As well as being an iconic architectural landmark, the château has a different face depending on the season. In autumn, when the waters recede, it evokes the misty landscapes of Scotland. In spring, it seems to float on the water, like a romantic mirage. As for winter and summer, we’ll let you be surprised!
An immersive and entertaining visit
Today, Château de la Roche offers much more than a simple tour: it brings its past to life! In reconstructed settings, actor-guides take you back in time on theatrical tours as Mr. and Mrs. Roustan, the former owners of the Château. You’ll experience a lively and original immersion in the castle’s history. For enigma buffs , there are also two escape games full of twists and turns. You can choose between a mission of spiritualism in a haunted castle or a race against time to escape the rising waters. So, what do you want to escape?
Whether you’re in the mood for a lively or contemplative getaway, Château de la Roche is a sure bet for a unique and relaxing experience near Lyon!
