While thousands of Lyonnais flock to the Groupama Stadium or the LDLC Arena for the 2026 world pop tours, a more discreet, almost magnetic movement is filling the historic courtyards of Vieux Lyon and the hidden chapels of the Presqu’île.
Does this mean we are swapping big pop events for the gentle acoustics of violins? Not exactly, but it is clear that a growing proportion of the public is now choosing to include classical music in their leisure activities.

French youth at the forefront
The Classical Pulse 2026 report, based on a study conducted by Dynata among 8,000 people in ten countries, raises a fascinating question: has the symphony become the new playground for Gen Z? The figures show a marked commitment:
- A solid foundation: 54% of French people (more than half the population) have attended a classical concert in their lifetime.
- Young dynamism: Among French people under 45 who have already taken the plunge, 93% have returned at least once in the past year.
- The European top 3: This recurrence rate places France among the leading countries for youth cultural engagement.
New standards for an audience seeking immersion
Despite this interest, the traditional format still needs to win over those who remain outside the concert halls. For French people who have never attended a classical concert, certain obstacles remain:
- Boredom: 14% consider classical formats too long, placing France just behind Italy in this regard.
- The setting: 25% of listeners want to discover music in unconventional venues, such as museums or historic monuments.
The audience wants a total spectacle. With 32% of French people wanting visual effects, France is close behind Spain (34%) at the top of European expectations.

A global, collective, and generational revolution
The days of poring over paper cultural calendars seem to be over: 61% of Gen Z and Millennial audiences find their next outings via social media.
And for 43% of those surveyed, the most important thing is no longer just listening to a concert, but sharing the moment with loved ones. And for that, Lyon is full of iconic venues that meet this quest for collective escape.
