Here we are, in the middle of January, and for some of us, it’s a depressing time of year. Between the post-traumatic shock of the festive season, the cold, Dry January, slippery sidewalks and Blue Monday, the beginning of the year is not exactly Carnival de Copacabana… Nevertheless, this weekend, the Palais des Congrès de Lyon received the news that a local wine had been voted “one of the best on the planet”… So, cock-a-doodle-doo!
Jean-Paul Ruet’s Morgon 2024, best Gamay in the world 2026
This weekend saw the 16th edition of the Concours International du Gamay held in Lyon, where the eyes of wine-lovers everywhere, from oenologists to wine merchants, were riveted on the 615 samples competing for the prize. After an initial series of selections, 11 bottles were finally chosen to take part in a final tasting. The super jury’s verdict was clear: the world’s best Gamay came from Jean-Paul Ruet’s domaine in Saint-Étienne-des-Oullières.
One of the best bottles in the world… but with how many zeros in the price? Well, that’s the first piece of good news this year: according to the very serious Guide Hachette des Vins, the price doesn’t exceed €15. You’ve got it, the best way to shine if one day you have to take care of the wine for a dinner party with your loved ones…
What is Gamay?
Gamay is a historic grape variety found mainly in Burgundy and Beaujolais. But as you can imagine, this little grape has come a long way! Today, it can be found in Switzerland, Italy, California, South Africa and Brazil – in short, on every continent!
Gamay produces rather fruity red wines with strawberry and cherry aromas that can be enjoyed relatively young. They’re perfect with vegetables such as spinach or potatoes, roast chicken or duck… In short, they’re the perfect accompaniment to a delicious meal at home!
For your health, beware of alcohol abuse. Drink in moderation.
