It sits proudly on top of its plateau, like a champion on his podium. For the village of Château-Chalon is also a record-breaker of its kind. Like Oingt and Yvoire, it is one of France’s most beautiful villages. Its famous Vin Jaune, known as “Jura gold”, is also consumed on the world’s finest tables . And as good fortune never comes alone, this village is just a stone’s throw (12 km only!) from Baume-les-Messieurs, another jewel in the Jura crown. Coincidence? Not really. Our ancestors simply understood that the region was a treasure trove in which to thrive…
Château-Chalon, one of France’s most beautiful hilltop villages
Château-Chalon dominates the plain of the Haute Seille in all its splendor… A veritable belvedere village, Château-Chalon is a unique place. Despite its small size (146 inhabitants in 2022), its history takes us back to the time of the Romans and Gauls. Still visible today, the 11th-century Saint-Pierre church, the ruins of the 9th-century fortified castle and the abbey are the main historical landmarks.
But beyond these remains, it’s the village itself that deserves our full attention. Its narrow streets and stone-built houses give the place a real charm. And don’t forget to visit one of the village’s 4 belvederes to admire the panorama. And if you’re lucky enough to catch a sunset, you’ll probably never see anything more beautiful. The last rays of the sun caress the surrounding vines, giving the village panorama an Olympian feel…
From its history to its worldwide renown, this yellow wine is gold.
It’s here (and nowhere else in the world!) that Savagnin grapes are grown, giving the taste and color of the famous nectar, Vin Jaune de Château-Chalon. The Vin Jaune draws its uniqueness not only from its terroir, but also from its vinification. Aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 6 years, the wine naturally forms the yeast that gives it its unique taste. Hazelnut, honey, almond… these are just some of the flavors you can taste when you dip your lips in a glass of this wine. Another special feature: bottles of Vin Jaune, known as “clavelin”, hold 62 cl (compared with 75 cl for a classic bottle).
The world’s greatest chefs praise it for its distinctive taste. Paul Bocuse‘s signature dish of Poulet au vin jaune et morilles is just one example. Further proof of its prestige: in 2018, a bottle of Vin Jaune dating back to 1774 was auctioned off for €107,700… Further elevating the village of Château-Chalon to the rank of timeless city.
