This time, it’s not a nearby village, but an absolutely fascinating natural site, accessible from Part-Dieu station in just 25 minutes. The lake’s waters evoke a sense of faraway places. And let me tell you, with the spring sunshine, the array of colors is simply sublime. So, get ready to be blown away—and don’t forget your camera, because this might just be your best discovery of the year.
The Blue Lake of Ambérieu-en-Bugey

Sometimes emerald green, sometimes azure blue…it all depends on the sun in the sky, which gives the lake these otherworldly colors. This fascinating spectacle inspires as much admiration as it does legends. It is said that these unique colors come from the oxidation of copper from an old mine located nearby. Others simply attribute them to the combination of light and soil that creates these bursts of color. Although the area has the feel of a paradise island, swimming is strictly prohibited to preserve the ecosystem. But a picnic break and a stroll through the surroundings will make your day magical.
A family getaway from downtown Lyon
It all starts at Part-Dieu Station, heading toward Ambérieu-en-Bugey. Once there, you’ll need to walk to the small hamlet of Vareilles, then take a trail through the woods that follows the Gardon stream. This walk will take you past the Gardon Cave, a remarkable archaeological site bearing witness to human life during the Neolithic era. Our ancestors had already caught wind of this local French Riviera!

Once you reach the lake, of course, take a moment to enjoy the scenery, but we highly recommend extending your hike a bit further. The climb to the Château de Saint-Germain , for example, forms a beautiful loop that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. As you can see, this spot in the Ain is a little hidden paradise just outside Lyon that we must do our best to preserve. We’re counting on you!
