Most people think of January 1st as a day to curl up with a good book or curl up on the sofa with a rerun of a TV show they’ve never watched before. But you’re never safe from a little last-minute whim… Even if the trend is for stores to close altogether, we tell you where to go shopping in Lyon.
Overview of supermarkets and food stores
According to the information we were able to obtain, we can expect an even greater proportion of stores to be closed on January 1 than on December 25. Major shopping temples such as Westfield La Part-Dieu, Confluence and Carré de Soie will be closed, as will the vast majority of supermarkets and mini-markets. Even the Carrefour City in the Gare Part-Dieu concourse will be closed. You’ll have to rely on small local grocery stores to buy your carton of milk…
What about local shops (pharmacies, bakeries, tobacconists, etc.)?
Here too, there’s no denying that most of them will be closed. What’s more, this year, January 1st falls on a Thursday, so many businesses will take advantage of the opportunity to close on Friday and not reopen until Monday, January 5th…
As for bakeries, it’s impossible to draw up a list of those that are open, but if we follow the trend of previous years, the vast majority will remain closed, taking this well-deserved day of rest to breathe between the log and the galette des Rois. As for pharmacies, those on duty are providing service as usual. If in doubt, dial 3237.
As for tobacconists, some will be open, such as Pêcherie, Le Gitana (Cours de la Liberté) and Tabac La Pipe (Avenue Berthelot).
As you can see, January 1st looks set to be a quiet one, but there’s nothing to stop you, weather permitting, from taking a breather for a while to embrace the year 2026 in style!
