Lyon and New York are already linked by the fountain at Place des Terreaux and the Statue of Liberty, both the brainchild of Auguste Bartholdi. But since early September, a new connection has united the “Big Apple” with the capital of Gaul. Forget the classic Italian pizzeria (which we love too, don’t worry): make way for the American version that makes our mouths water just as much as it takes us on a journey.
Bonnie’s Pizza: The Croix-Rousse with a Taste of the Big Apple
Welcome to Bonnie’s Pizza. Here, you come for a slice to devour on the go, or to sit down with friends for a wild feast (as befits the capital of Gaul). As you can see, it all depends on your mood and the size of your appetite. Expect to pay 4 euros for a slice of Margherita and 6 euros for the Special Grandma, the house specialty. That’s not cheap for a slice of pizza, but don’t forget that these are top-notch slices. Two slices will do you just fine; three, and you’re already eating more than you can handle; any more than that, and you’re playing with your health.
If you’re here to share several pizzas with friends, two sizes are available: 30 or 45 cm. Margherita and Pepperoni, of course, but also bolder creations like the “Piqûre d’abeille” with its hint of honey, or the BBQ Chicken piled high with roasted chicken. We also recommend trying the Khachapuri, a kind of cheese-filled pastry, perfect for sharing. For the most adventurous, finish on a high note with a small cookie to cap off your trip across the Atlantic. To stay true to the New York image of the city that never sleeps, you can walk through the doors of Bonnie’s Pizza as early as 9 a.m. Warning! Just keep in mind that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, in case you get an unexpected craving. You’ve been warned!
A duo already well-known to local foodies
The idea for Bonnie’s Pizza sprang from the minds of David Schayne and Robert Flaherty, the two partners at the helm of Odessa Comptoir, a wine bar well-known to all lovers of French wine. Here, you’ll find what you can’t get at the supermarket: a selection of bottles where the labels rival the very flavor of the wine itself in ingenuity.
Why switch from wine to pizza? Because it’s just a short hop from the vineyard to the mozzarella. Taking a sip of good wine right before digging into a slice of pizza is like savoring creamy cheese with crusty bread: a chemical reaction takes place in your mouth—the alpha and omega, the yin and yang… In short, we’ve come full circle. So, if you’re looking for a little comfort after the recent time change, you know where to turn!
