Press! This is the name of the next Rencontres Internationales du Dessin de Presse et des Médias in Lyon. It’s also what’s shaping up to be the trend for visitors to attend the festivities. With Printemps du Cinéma, and this festival, Lyon is set to experience a veritable cultural effervescence this March weekend.
500 drawings, 50 guest artists and a poster that’s already a collector’s item
In just 4 editions, the Ça Presse! festival has established itself as a major drawing event in France. The 2024 edition was a success, with over 8,000 visitors and no fewer than 1,000 schoolchildren.
On the program: drawing from every angle! With screenings, exhibitions, round tables, workshops and events for all ages. An opportunity to revisit the importance of drawing in the press and its role in awakening the young. Lyon’s Hôtel de Ville will be the venue for the festival, but events will also be held at the Cinéma Comoedia, Lyon’s municipal archives and in Bron.
This year, a number of the biggest names in French cartooning will be taking part, including Willem, Coco, Vuillemin and Pancho, as well as artists from Spain, Denmark and Argentina. One of the highlights of the festival will be to honor a cartoonist from a country where he or she can’t practice their profession as they should. This year, it’s Lebanon with Bernard Hage. The poster was designed by Willem, an emblematic figure from Charlie Hebdo.
A particularly eagerly-awaited edition
Press cartoons took on a whole new role in our lives after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, which took place… 10 years ago. It’s with this in mind that this next meeting will have a particular resonance, with questions that remain firmly anchored in our minds. What remains of the Charlie spirit, 10 years on? What is the place of drawing in the press and media in 2025, in the context we know today? The festival also includes, in the upper courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville, an exhibition dedicated to the career of Charb, assassinated during the 2015 attacks.
