Guide du Routard 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015… you can add another 10 plaques (including the one from 2026) to give you an idea of the place. Opened in 1923, the restaurant hasn’t aged a bit. Better yet, it seems to get better with time. Small in size, much like its counterpart Chez Hugon, La Mère Jean is nonetheless renowned.
La Mère Jean: a small bouchon with a long history

Let’s step inside one of Lyon’s oldest and most welcoming bouchons. Located on the famous Rue des Marronniers, not far from Chez Mounier, La Mère Jean welcomes you with open arms into its space—small in size but grand in its warm hospitality. Orange walls, wooden tables, shelves lined with carafes and other bottles: before you dig in, La Mère Jean is first and foremost a feast for the eyes. You slip into this long, narrow dining room that tells a century-old story our great-grandparents also knew.
Its few tables (barely ten) fill up quickly, both at lunch and dinner, as diners come to savor the restaurant’s menu. As befits a bouchon—and a Lyon-style one at that—the food here evokes the Lyon of yesteryear. Start with eggs en meurette or cervelle de canut, then move on to the must-try pike quenelles or tablier de sapeur. Mère Richard’s Saint-Marcellin cheese will be the perfect finishing touch for dessert. The restaurant also offers an excellent wine list to pair with this festive meal! A festive meal, certainly, but one that won’t break the bank: the restaurant offers several starter-main-dessert set menus starting at €20. Homemade food at that price—you’ll definitely want to come back for more.
One of the last remaining “Mères Lyonnaises” establishments
Along with La Mère Brazier and Le Casse-Museau (opened by Tante Paulette in 1947), La Mère Jean is undoubtedly one of the last historic establishments among Lyon’s “Mères.” Back in the day, the spot was known for its petit salé, andouillettes, and pitcher of Beaujolais—all cherished by a loyal, neighborhood clientele.
Opened in 1923 by Françoise Donnet, the bouchon quickly became a must-visit spot for all lovers of local cuisine. For 103 years, people have been coming to La Mère Jean to enjoy a good meal and, above all, to have a good time. From the welcome to the service, nothing is left to chance—and it’s all done without the slightest pretense. If conviviality were to take on a human form in Lyon, it would probably come to sit down at a table at La Mère Jean…
