Let’s continue our tour of the grand towns in the Lyon area that have retained their old-world charm. “The list is long,” you might say. Indeed, there’s plenty to explore (and thank goodness!), and this town we’re about to tell you about is no skinny slice of baguette—it’s a hearty loaf of country bread. Just as we’ve done with Tournus and Trévoux—two little-known gems on the outskirts of Lyon—let’s set our sights today on Montbrison!
Montbrison, the quintessential medieval town
Heading west, beyond the Monts du Lyonnais and toward the Forez Plain, to the beautiful town of Montbrison, which impresses with its charm and the abundance of things to see (and taste). The history of this Forez town speaks for itself: for nearly 700 years, it was the capital of Forez, one of the most influential counties not only in France but throughout Europe. Thanks to this past, the town experienced a true golden age and has preserved an exceptional heritage.
In the historic center, head to the Notre-Dame-d’Espérance Collegiate Church, a church celebrating its 560th anniversary, as it was completed in 1466 after more than 200 years of construction. Its monumental organ is classified as a historic monument, and its stained-glass windows are particularly remarkable. Not far from there lies a site unique in France: La Diana, an architectural masterpiece dating from the 14th century. Its wooden pointed arch vault is adorned with more than 1,700 coats of arms, forming the largest preserved armorial in existence. The adjoining library houses no fewer than 30,000 books dedicated to regional history… Fascinating! Add to that a historic center with just the right mix of narrow streets and small squares to make it a charming town to visit from Lyon.
Finally, if you feel like stretching your legs, head up to Calvaire Hill—Mont Briso—which gave the town its name. From up there, the exceptional 360° panoramic view lets you admire the Forez Plain and the Monts du Lyonnais, all the way to the Alps.
The Montbrison market, one of the most beautiful in France
Let’s add the cherry on top of this already mouthwatering treat that is Montbrison. As the oldest market in the Loire region, Montbrison’s market is a must-see. Every Saturday morning, no fewer than 200 vendors come to offer the best local products from the Forez region. Finding freshly picked fruits and vegetables or artisanal goods is still possible! Fourme de Montbrison (AOP), herb-stuffed blood sausages, wild blueberries, and Forez apples and pears… Shoppers’ baskets are usually well-stocked by the end of the market. As such, the Montbrison market was voted “France’s Most Beautiful Market” in 2019 and has lost none of its splendor since.
