Here’s a regional specialty that’s all too often overlooked, yet has everything it takes to compete with dame pizza and its big sisters, pastas. In Lyon, we know that it’ s possible to eat well for cheap. And to know that there’s a local alternative to this everyday cuisine, we can’t be happier.
With Gratin, you’ll get to know the folds and creases of this little stuffed square.
This is the challenge facing Gratin, who have truly all-in on the raviole. And if you’re going to bet everything on the same horse, you might as well do it right. That’s why, at Gratin, you’ll be able to eat raviole from Mère Maury: an institution founded in 1875 in Romans-sur-Isère, which doesn’t skimp on the quality of its products. Quite simply, it’s the queen of the place. In gratin, of course, but also in salad, broth and even dessert.
With the heat in full force, we headed straight for the shady terrace for a fresh dish: bacon-and-egg salad and tomato-black olive-pesto salad (with extra burrata), topped, of course, with ravioli galore. Unsurprisingly, we were delighted. Both visually and in terms of taste, it was a real pleasure to finish our plate. We promised ourselves we’d come back when it’s cooler to try the ravioli gratins, the house’s star dish. The welcome, too, lived up to our expectations: simple and warm.
So, team raviole or team ravioli?
A single letter difference, and yet! The raviole is smaller, thinner and, in fine, more refined. It dates back to the 15th century and originated in Italy, but developed into the form we know today in the Dauphiné region. Ravioli, on the other hand, is much larger and, unsurprisingly, comes from Italy. It’s usually stuffed with meat and served with sauce. Let’s face it, ravioli is also a great way to enjoy a meal.
The restaurant is open 6 days a week, and if you’d like to bring a little happiness home, you can order takeaway or even have it delivered. What do the people want?
