There are already plenty of them in our guide to villages to discover around Lyon, but when you love something, you don’t count the cost. This one has the double advantage of being incredibly charming and located in an area well worth a detour. Let’s head to Vaux-en-Bugey!
Vaux-en-Bugey, the medieval town where tradition meets wine heritage

We’re taking you to the village of Vaux-en-Bugey, a true little paradise. The town’s history dates back to Roman times, with artifacts (including coins and vases from the 2nd and 5th centuries) discovered in an old quarry near City Hall. Starting in the 10th century, the town took shape as a fortified settlement with a circular street (Rue Ferrachat) encircling the magnificent church and its octagonal bell tower.

The icing on the cake? The little Buizin River that runs right through the village, giving it the feel of a movie set. Following the river upstream, you’ll discover the small hamlet of Vaux-Févroux and, not far away on the hill, the Nièvre Chapel, which overlooks the surrounding area, offering an exceptional view of the nearby vineyards. Because the other highlight of the town lies nearby: the village is nestled in a wine-growing region known for producing the famous Bugey wine.
Bugey, one of the most beautiful regions just outside Lyon

To talk only about the village—which is certainly a reason to visit—would be to deprive you of part of the feast. And like any self-respecting Lyonnais, after the main course, it’s time for dessert! Just like Beaujolais or the Monts du Lyonnais, Bugey is a wonderful region to discover just outside Lyon.
We highly encourage you to go (re)discover the medieval town of Pérouges, which remains one of the most fascinating sites in our local heritage. More of a nature lover? Head to Lac Bleu d’Ambérieu, just a few kilometers from Vaux-en-Bugey. This gem with its turquoise waters is a must-see to be able to say, “I was there.”
