If long hikes are your thing, or if you’re simply looking for a new challenge, here’s an idea that might hit the mark. We’ve found just the thing to quench your thirst for the great outdoors—and it’s all served up on a silver platter. Living near Lyon, we too often forget that the surrounding area is unique in the world, so much so that it has earned praise from UNESCO. This 5-day hike (which can, of course, be adapted to suit any preference) will allow you to get to know the Beaujolais region and the enchanting world of the Pierres Dorées better than anyone else…
The Tour du Beaujolais des Pierres Dorées long-distance hiking trail

Lozanne, Chazay-d’Azergues, Bagnols, Chessy, Châtillon, Charnay… here is a general outline of this GR (Grande Randonnée) trail, which crisscrosses the Pierres Dorées region in every direction. A touch of Tuscany, thousand-year-old castles, medieval villages—all surrounded by vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see.
Designated as a GRP (Grande Randonnée de Pays) since 2016, the trail offers a wide range of lodging options (gîtes, inns, hotels, campgrounds) and places to eat. After all that effort, of course, it’s time for some comfort! And when you’ve been walking all day through the vineyards, there’s no rule against sampling one of the region’s many wines.
A hike for all skill levels

Considered easy due to the minimal elevation gain, the trail may seem daunting because of the distance involved. But first, you should never underestimate yourself, and second, it can be adapted to suit any preference. There are à la carte routes where no fewer than 12 half-day loops are available, all while taking in many of the must-see sites of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Beaujolais (the Lucenay quarry, Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin, the Chessy mines, the Glay quarry…).
For example, why not start by hiking the first two sections from Lozanne to Rivolet via Pommiers? You’ll already be dazzled by the beauty of the surroundings and will have only one desire… to keep going! Feel free to check out the information and documents available directly on the Beaujolais Tourisme website and on MonGR.
