With 10,000 m² of land developed or enhanced, including 7,000 m² of publicly accessible nature areas, Lyon continues its green transformation! The Fourvière hill, which offers one of the finest views of Lyon’s landscape, will soon be giving visitors the chance to admire the Croix-Rousse, the Presqu’île, the Confluence, Vaise and even the Alps from new green paths. The Parc des Balmes will see the planting of some 2,000 plants and 900 linear meters of walkways, for a unique discovery experience combining nature and panorama in the heart of the city.
Fourvière hill transformed into a plant panorama

The Parc des Balmes will reshape the Fourvière hill between the 5th and 9th arrondissements, offering a vast natural space in the heart of the city. This unprecedented project will feature walking trails, a planted esplanade and several belvederes with spectacular views over Lyon. Located close to the Jardin des Curiosités, the site will showcase panoramas that were previously unknown or inaccessible.
One of the highlights of the project is the redevelopment of the Saint Just Bastion belvedere, currently closed to the public. A 700 m² area will be transformed to welcome visitors in a soothing setting, with a remarkable view over the city. The bastion itself will remain closed for safety reasons.
Towards greater urban biodiversity
This project is part of a wider ambition to reconnect the people of Lyon with nature. A green link will connect the Saint-Jean district to the Fourvière basilica, via the Tramassac balme, the Antiquaille and the Jardin du Rosaire. This entirely green path will offer a gentle alternative for discovering the hill in a different way.
>TheParc des Balmes is one of the first concrete achievements of the Grand Parc des Balmes, a vast network of 80 hectares of nature, connected to the Metropolitan Green and Blue Pact, supported by the Metropole of Lyon.
Work will begin in late summer, with a gradual opening scheduled between June and November 2026. An innovative project, combining heritage, ecology and quality of lifereinforces Lyon’s commitment to a greener city.
