In October, the spotlight will be on Lyon. While Cannes and Deauville come every year to burnish the image of cinema, let’s not forget that it was invented in Lyon nearly 130 years ago, and not even Hollywood can take that away from us. So, in October, Lyon will be vibrating to the rhythm of the 7th art, with a host of guests, screenings and a whole host of other events in the most beautiful venues in the capital of Gaul.
Over 500 screenings: retrospectives, master classes, ciné-concerts and previews…
In 9 days of festival, that’s exactly 55.5 films/day... So we’re going to have to get up very early and stay up even later. When we received the official program for this year’s festival, we were enthusiastic, stabilo in hand, trying to underline all the things to do. We quickly realized that it would be impossible to see everything.
The previews of Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague and Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White seem a must. A “Japanime” night will also be offered, with the screening of 4 masterpieces (October 18 at 8:30 p.m.), including Hayao Miyazaki’s magnificent Princess Mononoké, already in the spotlight in Lyon. And, in a nod to our beloved Capital des Gaules, the full broadcast of the Asterix and Obelix: The Battle of the Chiefsseries, with the presence of the master, Alain Chabat, is clearly at the top of our October to-do list.
An appalling guest list
His name isn’t as popular as Martin Scorsese’ s or Steven Spielberg’ s, yet Michael Mann’s filmography is just as impressive. An emblematic figure of Hollywood, he is responsible for such hits as Heat with Al Pacino, Collateral with Tom Cruise and Ali with Will Smith. An exceptional meeting will be held on the stage of the sublime Célestins Italian-style theater on Friday, October 17 at 3pm.
Natalie Portman, Alain Chabat, Sean Penn, John Woo, Isabelle Huppert (Prix Lumière 2024) and Juliette Binoche... the list is long and has caused a few palpitations at the office. You guessed it: the whole world will be there to celebrate cinema in a series of not-to-be-missed events and encounters. Sean Penn, for example, will be presenting his masterpiece Into the Wild at Halle Tony Garnier on October 12 at 3pm, followed by a master class at Pathé Bellecour on October 13 at 3pm.
