The end of the year means Christmas, and Christmas means lights. We wait for them to fill us with wonder when we go shopping, or just to make us dream for a few moments. But where can you see the Christmas lights in and around Lyon? Here are a few places where you can immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere of Christmas. What’s more, as part of the “Presqu’île à vivre” project, the town council has decided to step up its support for the city’s illuminations this year, doubling the budget compared with last year. Let’s make the most of it!
Place Carnot, the city’s finest illuminations for the Christmas market
It’s at Place Carnot that you’ll undoubtedly see the most beautiful Christmas illuminations (apart from the Fête des Lumières), as this is where Lyon’s Christmas Market is held, with its sublime fir tree! Everything is tastefully decorated, and it’s a pleasure to look up to the sky with a cup of hot chocolate between your mittens. Tinsel in the trees and a Christmas atmosphere, it’s all there!
Winter Paseo on Rue de la République
El Paseo in Spanish means the promenade. And that’s exactly what this series of illuminations is all about, adorning the Rue de la République to perfection at the end of the year. The perspective and depth of the street create a unique optical effect, giving the impression of an infinite tunnel of light… The decorations are in two parts: a “crystal sky” running from Place des Cordeliers to Place de la République, and a gallery of gold, azure and silver between Place de la République and Place Bellecour. A must-see! You’ll also find beautiful illuminations on Cours Lafayette, Place Sainte Anne and in the Gerland district.
As part of the new low-energy plan implemented by many cities, such as Lyon, the Christmas lights will go out at 11 p.m. each evening, instead of midnight.
“Post Idols” at the Henri Malartre Automobile Museum
For those nostalgic for the Fête des Lumières, there’s still plenty to marvel at until January! In the grounds of the Musée Henri Malarte, located in the Château de Rochetaillé, two structures await you. They are the focus of much attention, both in terms of form and composition!
Les Lumières Sauvages du Safari de Peaugres
It’s not really in Lyon, but it’s exceptional enough to warrant a mention. From November 5 to March 25, the Peaugres Safari is celebrating its Festival of Lights! For its second edition, the Safari des Lumières Sauvages welcomes you at dusk to admire over 1,000 breathtaking light sculptures! They’re all handmade, and represent animals and plants. Like a fairytale zoo, let yourself be transported into the fabulous world of lights at the Peaugres Safari…
Your Christmas tree!
And to make sure you don’t forget anything, your Christmas tree is the centerpiece of your Christmas festivities. During the festive season, it takes pride of place in the living room and looks down on you every morning in all its splendor!
