It’s hot as hell and Lyon’s few swimming pools are always packed… We’re fed up too! So we’ve put together a list of quiet swimming spots around Lyon for a refreshing getaway! And don’t forget to bring your walking shoes, because a lake means great walks in the surrounding area!
1. Lac de Miribel-Jonage: the most popular lake
It’s probably the best-known lake in the whole of Lyon, and also the most accessible, since it’s served by the city’s public transport network. However, in the middle of summer, it can be just as difficult to find a place there as at the Rhône swimming pool. But there are plenty of hidden coves here, so don’t hesitate to take a look around! Website : Lac de Miribel-Jonage.
2. Lac d’Aiguebelette: a breathtaking landscape
1h30 from Lyon, this lake is ideally located: between mountains and forest, it offers a setting so pleasant that it’s hard to leave. It’s also a place where you can indulge in a variety of water sports! Only, it’s also one of the most popular spots in the region, so it might be crowded, but still less so than Miribel, that’s for sure. Website : Lac d’Aiguebelette.
3. Lake Annecy: between town and nature
It had to be on our list: the famous Lac d’Annecy, renowned for its unrivalled beauty. All around it are beaches and bathing spots, more or less in peace and quiet. But it’s so big that if you look hard enough, away from the touristy-looking spots, you’re sure to find THE ideal spot to bask with family or friends! Website Lake Annecy.
4. Lac de Nantua: the Jura jewel case
This time, we’re off to the Ain! This lake has a fascinating history, which we invite you to discover on its website. Its color changes according to the weather: sapphire blue, dark green or very light blue, it’s a sight to behold at least once in your life. With its pontoons and various swimming spots, it’s surely one of the most beautiful jewels on this list.
5. Lac de Paladru: fine sand and crystal-clear water
Well-known in the Voiron region, this splendid lake is about an hour’s drive from Lyon. The water is crystal-clear, and there’s plenty to do here: fishing, sailing, pedal-boating, swimming… There’s something for everyone. It’s also a meeting place for people from Grenoble and Lyon, a neutral zone where conflict is not welcome (yes, we’ll stop with this futile quarrel afterwards, I promise). The website: Lac de Paladru.
6. Lac du Bourget in Savoie: a panoramic view
Lac du Bourget is France’s largest natural lake. With much of it still completely wild, it’s home to numerous plant and animal species. From Aix-les-Bains to Chambéry, the lake offers a variety of views, from a city canal to the freedom of a wild expanse. A unique space in which to swim!
7. Lac de Vouglans: 35km of turquoise water
France’s 3rd largest man-made lake welcomes you to the Jura! Swimming in crystal-clear water, water sports and sunbathing on the banks of the lapping waves – what more could you ask for? And when it comes to spots, there’s something for everyone! Whether you’re a fan of fine sand or well-mown lawns, there’s something for everyone. Website Lac de Vouglans
8. Lake Genin
Looking for nature, freshness and tranquillity just an hour from Lyon? Head for Lac Genin, a real gem nestled at an altitude of 830 metres in the heart of the Haut-Bugey region. Nicknamed “the little Canada of the Haut Buguet”, this mountain lake surrounded by fir trees offers an idyllic setting for a rejuvenating getaway! Classified as a ” natural and picturesque site” since 1935, Lac Genin stretches over 8 hectares between the communes of Oyonnax, Échallon and Charix. On site, you’ll find everything you need for a successful weekend: supervised swimming in summer, hiking and mountain-biking trails for outdoor enthusiasts and shaded areas for relaxation!
