It’s true that since spring arrived, we’ve been inviting you to head out into the countryside to explore the areas around Lyon. But between the many villages, our latest discoveries like the Terrasse de Chiroubles, and the classic destinations such as Annecy, the great outdoors does you good. But when you’re short on time and weekends are already packed, it’s not so easy… don’t panic! In Lyon, there are peaceful spots where you can recharge without having to leave the city. One of our favorites? This little haven of peace right in the heart of Old Lyon.
The Gadagne Hanging Garden

Old Lyon never ceases to surprise us. After the “cochleate staircase,” a true marvel of Renaissance architecture, this time we’re talking about a little “Babylon.” Nestled on the 4th floor of a building that houses two of the city’s major museums—the Lyon History Museum (MHL) and the Museum of Puppetry Arts (MAM)— the garden is a haven of peace unlike any other in all of Lyon.
Of course, don’t expect a second Tête d’Or Park with its 106 hectares, but rather a sacred spot that retains all its intimacy, perfect for rest and daydreaming. Imagine yourself settled into a deck chair for one of those endless naps, or putting the world to rights with your friends and planning which concerts or festivals to attend next… all in a setting where, as a certain poet would say: “all is order and beauty, luxury, calm, and pleasure…”
A garden with a historywith a capital H
Home to the Lyon History Museum, it was only natural that the garden would also carve out its own niche (no pun intended) in Lyon’s grand history. The site is mentioned in writings dating back to the 14th century and, over the centuries, was developed, divided, and remodeled, only to be neglected and left to decay during the 20th century. The City of Lyon, then the owner of the property, undertook a major renovation project of the Hôtel de Gadagne (1998–2009).
Today, the garden features a café-restaurant where you can enjoy a gourmet meal or a refreshing break in a green setting unique to Lyon. Just what you need to take the fun a step further!
